There is lots of talk about fasting and its benefits these days. But what exactly is fasting?
Fasting, with its ancient roots and modern relevance, involves abstaining from food and sometimes beverages for a designated period. There are many types of fasts, including the Daniel fast, alternate day fasting, intermittent fasting (most days 12-16 hours), bone broth fast (90 hours), extended fasting, and water fasting (211 hours)

A water fast involves abstaining from all food and beverages except water for a designated period. This type of fasting can bring about profound changes in your body and mind. Let’s explore what happens when you fast.

Day by Day Breakdown
Day 1
Hour 1 – 24: After the last meal, your body starts to use up glycogen stores for energy. Once these stores are depleted, the body transitions into a fasting state. Insulin levels drop, signaling the start of ketosis, where the body burns fat for fuel.
Day 2
Hour 24 – 48: Ketosis deepens, providing a steady source of energy. Mental clarity may improve as the brain adapts to using ketones.
Day 3
Hour 48 – 72: Autophagy, the cellular self-cleaning process, intensifies. This removes damaged cells and promotes cell renewal, eliminating toxins stored in fat cells. Energy levels may fluctuate.
Day 4-6
Hours 72 – 96: Detox symptoms may peak, including headaches, fatigue, and digestive discomfort, as the body expels accumulated toxins. During this time, stem cell production ramps up, allowing new stem cells to repair injured body parts.

My Personal Testimony
I embarked on my fasting journey at a low point in my life. It started spontaneously after receiving a text message that pushed me over the edge.
Days 3 and 7 were the toughest, but the benefits were remarkable. During my fast, I had multiple job interviews and secured a full-time position as an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner. My company had been struggling to find a supervising physician, but during my fast, a previously unresponsive physician reappeared, and we signed a contract. I also received an opportunity to begin IV hydration within a spa.
Additionally, I managed to hold an 8-year-old’s birthday party at an ice cream shop with over 20 kids with complete calm, ease, and not a bit of stress. The energy and mental clarity felt so good that I really did not want to stop.
My weight over the past 7-8 years fluctuated between 136 – 138 lbs, peaking at 145 lbs. After my 9-day water fast, I weighed 120.2 lbs. While some weight will return, it will redistribute in different ways.
